For many years, I've been thinking about starting a blog.
I finally did it! This is it. First post. For all you readers who want to follow in my footsteps, Here is some wisdom about my journey. Pay attention, and someday you too, could write a blog post.
Find a blog you love. Become obsessed with it. Read right though the archive until there is nothing left. Sit for a moment with your empty coffee cup, and feel sad that there is nothing left.
Think, "I could do that". Mine might actually be better. The world needs to know about my shower-thoughts. It's a crime against humanity not to preserve them
Really get in your head, write some posts (only in your head though). Laugh about how funny you are to yourself. It's ok to write down ideas at this point, but don't actually write the post, because there is much more to figure out.
Consider, what topics should you cover? You have too many interests. Maybe your blog should be laser focused on one topic. Maybe programming, game development? Hmm... you should probably make a game first so you have something to write about.
At this point you might be tempted to write a blog post, but not so fast, you need to decide on a blogging platform. It needs code formatting and syntax highlighting, maybe some custom interactive elements, like the ones on RedBlobGames. Survey all the blogs you like, and find all the best parts of each one. Your blog will be the best, and it needs to be just perfect. It's fine to spend days researching static site generators, but in the end you'll decide they aren't quite right. Since you're a programmer, you'll just make everything from scratch so that it's unique and perfect.
What happens if I get too famous? Should I worry about having a secret online identity to avoid future harassment from roaming gangs of angry TDD and OO developers?
Get distracted by something else, you'll come back to blogging eventually.
Read, be-inspired, think, worry, research - probably best to keep doing this for many years. each time you'll read new things, think more clever thought-posts, and set higher expectations for yourself. You're climbing a mountain. It's even ok to die and be re-incarnated a few times.
Write the first post, and post it somewhere
